[Wadi Majid north east Libya (historical variant)] [H2H] [HIS] [GD] Note this game is designed to be played with the “Senussi Force Set” from my FY2C extra nations pack (also available for download on the “The Blitz” website for download) installed.

Following the actions at Wadi Senab & Husheifyat earlier in the month, General Wallace (the commander of the Western Frontier Force) planned a surprise two pronged dawn attack on the Sanusi camp at Jebel Medwa on Christmas Morning.

Leading off the “right column” (essentially a 3 battalion infantry brigade) were to approach the camp from the north west relying on a dawn approach (beginning at 5am) to give then an element of surprise. After daybreak they were to have one of 14 Squadron’s RFC’s BE2C aircraft available to designate targets both for the 2 gun section of horse artillery they had with them and for the 2 4.7 inch guns of HMS Clematis that was laying just off shore to provide support.

Meanwhile the plan had been for the “left column” (a week 6 squadron cavalry brigade) starting at 4:45am to carry out a wide flanking movement to the east and come in behind the Sanusi position to cut off their retreat.

Like most plans however this one did not survive contact with the enemy. The right column were spotted by Sanusi sentries around 6am and by 7am the column’s cavalry advance guard were coming under artillery and machinegun fire. Prompt counter battery fire (both by the 13-pounter guns with the column and the heavier 4.7 inch guns of HMS Clematis soon knocked out 1 of the enemy guns and forced the rest to pull back.

By 8:45am an attack on the Sanusi position was being organized and by 10:15 the Sanusi force on the ridge (The so called “Northern Force”) had broken and were in flight. However partly due to lack of familiarity with the terrain and a successful blocking action by the separate Sanusi “Southern Force” as well as communications mix-up’s, the “left column” were unable to get into position to cut off the Sanusi line of retreat and their force therefore escaped to fight another day.
