17 October, 1940: Shortly after 0530 Kptlt Bleichrodt in U-48 came upon inbound Convoy SC-7. He flashed a contact report and moved in to attack. Doenitz responded by directing five other U-boats to the area. Bleichrodt easily penetrated the weak screen and sank 2 ships and damaged another before withdrawing.
