17 January, 1942: PQ-8, a small convoy under local escort was approaching the Kola inlet when it was spotted by U-454. Kptlt Hackländer maneuvered to attack, firing a spread of torpedoes that found their victim in the British steamer Harmatris. Avoiding the escort U-454 maneuvered further and made a second attack, sinking the HMS Matabele with heavy loss of life.
