21 January, 1940: Kptlt K-H Jenisch was moving in to set an attack on a small three ship convoy when two larger shadows came into view. Sensing a better opportunity, Jenisch changes his attack to these new ships. Firing a torpedo at each, he would score a hit on the destroyer HMS Exmouth. The second was a dud or a miss. Jensich would hunt the escaping freighter, but was unsuccessful in bringing her to bear. The Exmouth was the 3rd Allied warship lost to a U-boat and the first destroyer lost.
