April 28-29, 1943: The Germans would make one of their largest efforts of the war against Convoy ONS-5. Early on April 28 the convoy was spotted by U-650. That evening, they would attack with four other members of Gruppe Star. The British were alerted by HF/DF that there were enemy subs in the vicinity. They focused their defenses to the port side, where they expected the main attack. In difficult weather conditions, the Germans would be unable to score any hits, but 2 U-Boats would be damaged and forced to return to base. This would be only the first battle for the convoy.
