Zaragoza 4 August 1808: The Great Assault - After the second failed French assault, Verdier resolved on establishing a regular siege, sending troops across the Ebro to prevent Spanish reinforcements from entering via the San Lazaro suburb, and constructing trench-works up to the walls. On the afternoon of 4 August, after a heavy bombardment all morning, Verdier ordered a general assault.
