Scenario Briefing: The Battle of Jankau - Since 1644 had been a bad year for the Imperialists, in January 1645 the Swedish general Tortensson devised a plan for a three-pronged advance on Wien to win the war once and for all. The defense of Prague was crucial, so the Imperialist commander, Hatzfeld, had to wait until the enemy army was already on the move before reacting. Nevertheless, Hatzfeld was able to reach Horazdiowitz, a key crossing point on the Wottawa River, before Torstensson could arrive. However, the Imperialists were unable to block Torstensson's advance indefinitely, since a sudden freeze allowed the Swedish army to cross the Moldau on 2nd March. Discovering this, Hatzfeld force-marched his army to Jankau and adopted a defensive position before the enemy arrived. Rather than attempting to attack the Imperialists directly across the Jankowa stream, Torstensson decided to cross further along at dawn and then move around the south of the enemy position via Chapel Hill. Meanwhile, Hatzfeld had instructed Gotz, the reckless and insubordinate Imperialist left-wing commander, to occupy Chapel Hill. Gotz' failure to properly scout out the terrain and subsequent reckless cavalry assaults to recover the hill would play a key role in the Imperialist defeat. However, despite the destruction of Gotz' wing, Hatzfeld attempted to fight a defensive action on the wooded hill 548 in front of Skrysov village.
