Scenario Briefing: The Battle of Stresow (Historical)
During the Great Northern War Sweden tried its utmost to keep its possessions in Northern Germany. In 1715 the three fortified harbors of Stralsund, Wismar and Stettin were still in Swedish hands. Possession of Rügen was vital for Stralsund, the most important of the fortresses, which could only receive supplies from there. The Swedes, therefore, had a garrison of about 4,500 men on the island, and the troops were led by King Charles XII in person.
During the latter half of 1715 the Danes and their allies, the Prussians and Saxons, decided to seize possession of the island of Rügen as a prelude to an assault on Stralsund. They set aside a large force for the undertaking. The allied troops rapidly landed at the little town of Stresow on Rügen. They met no resistance, and in two hours most of the infantry together with the artillery were landed. Construction of a continuous earthwork with obstacles in front began immediately.
As soon as King Charles XII learned of this, he broke camp with his force of approximately 2,000 men and force-marched towards Stresow. Between 3:00 and 4:00 in the morning of November 16th the Swedes moved forward to the attack.
It had rained a lot prior to the battle, so the ground is very wet. In this scenario, the Swedish dragoons can dismount and fight on foot.
