Scenario Briefing: The Battle of Storkyro (or Napo, Napue or Lappola) (Historical)

During the 1713 the Russian army had advanced into Finland, defeating Armfeldt at Palkane, gaining a foothold in the Gulf of Bothnia and becoming a threat to the coast of Sweden. In August 1713 General Carl Gustaf Armfeldt had been given command of the Swedish army in Finland. This "Swedish" army was composed of Finnish troops who had been left to defend Finland on their own.

On February 7, 1714, Golitsyn's Corps advanced on Vaasa, where Armfeldt's forces were located. When Armfeldt became aware of the Russian movements, he began to concentrate his forces on Storkyro in an attempt to block the Russian advance. General Armfeldt had decided to face the advancing Russians near a village called Napue. The position was well chosen - good ground which limited the Russian ability to deploy their full forces. His men were outnumbered and had been stood in battle lines for 72 hours in freezing weather. Despite this, the infantry and even the militia, were in good spirits. However, the Russian advance had been unstoppable and their troops had enjoyed victory - it would be a hard battle.

On February 18, the Russian army overran a Finnish outpost near the village of Kuivila close to Storkyro. Golitsyn learned from the prisoners about Armfeldt's deployments at Storkyro. Using this knowledge Golitsyn sent most of his troops on a flanking move through the Finnish forests. Armfeldt saw this movement and quickly re-deployed the Finnish line to meet the threat.
