Scenario Briefing: The Battle of Wismar (What-if)

After their defeat in the Battle of Helsingborg in 1710, the Danish Army had evacuated Scania. King Fredrik IV then decided to turn his attention to the Swedish possessions in Northern Germany. The fortress of Wismar was the first and nearest goal, and a Danish Army of 19,000 men was assembled in Holstein in the beginning of July in order to open the new campaign. In the meantime, Fredrik IV's alliance partners, especially August II of Poland, convinced him to first concentrate all efforts on the capture of the fortress of Stralsund.

As a result, the Danish Army continued its march leaving only a weak observation and blockading corps under the command of Lt General Jørgen Rantzau outside Wismar. The Danish corps was in poor condition due to desertions and disease. The Swedish garrison consisted of 5,000 men under the command of Major General Martin Schoultz. After learning of the state of the Danish besiegers, Schoultz decided on a night attack on the Danish camp south of Wismar. Before the attack, Schoultz gathered a force of a total of 2,500 men, which consisted of six infantry battalions and two cavalry squads as well as 12 artillery pieces. Unluckily for the Swedes, Rantzau received word that something was going to occur. He ordered his cavalry to saddle up and his whole force stood to arms during the middle of the night. At 5:00 in the morning the Swedes attacked and threw themselves with fury on the Danish right flank.

In this variant of the scenario the Swedish attack with the whole Wismar garrison.
