Scenario Briefing: The Battle of Poltava (Historical)

"Med Guds hj鋖p"- In late 1708 harsh weather conditions, Russians scorched earth tactics and continuous attacks had forced Charles XII to interrupt his march on Moscow and establish winter quarters in Ukraine with the help of Ivan Mazepa, hetman of the Zaporizhian Host. After the extremely harsh winter of 1708-1709, the weakened Swedish army resumed operations in the spring of 1709 and began a siege of the fortress of Poltava. Meanwhile, a numerically superior Russian army commanded by Tsar Peter, advanced to Poltava in order to relieve the siege. Upon his arrival - still wary of the Swedish army - Tsar Peter built a fortified camp on the Vorskla, north of Poltava.

Between the Russian and Swedish forces the Yakovetski and Budyschenski woods formed a corridor in which the Russians built several small forts in a T shape. Charles XII decided to attack the Russians. Unfortunately, while observing the Russian position on the 20th of June, Charles XII was shot in the foot and wounded him so severely that he could not stand. This was a blow to the Swedes as Charles XII would be forced to hand over command of the Swedish attack to his subordinates.

The Swedes planned an attack early on the morning of the 28th of June. Two columns of infantry and cavalry were to by-pass the Russian forts to assault the main Russian army. It was an audacious plan that required exact timings, effective command and control and no small amount of luck. From the start things started going wrong - the attack was delayed by Swedish cavalry getting lost, then the whole attack being spotted by the Russians. The decision was taken to continue with the attack - "In the name of God then, let us go forward." So began the decisive battle of the Great Northern War.
