Scenario Briefing: The Battle of Narva (What if)

In February 1700, the war began when an alliance between Denmark-Norway, Saxony - Poland and Russia attacked Sweden's ally Holstein-Gottorp and the Swedish Baltic provinces. The Danish threat was averted after a Swedish landing on Zealand and the subsequent peace in Traventhal, which gave the Swedes the opportunity to rescue Narva, which was threatened by a Russian army of 37,000 soldiers.

The Russian army besieged the city in September 1700, building a fortified containment wall, equipped with artillery, around the city to protect against Swedish attempts to relive the garrison and raise the siege.

Charles XII advanced on the Russian Army besieging the garrison of Narva. Hugely outnumbered, the Swedes, nonetheless, deploy and prepare for the attack. Despite outnumbering the Swedes, the Russian morale is low. The troops are poorly trained and inexperienced, Tsar Peter has placed foreign Officers and inexperienced favorites in positions of command. Morale has been further undermined by the Tsar leaving the army.

The Duke de Croy, left in command, re-positioned the bulk of the Russian troops to face outwards. But as the weather begins to deteriorate and realizing how few Swedes there are, the Russian Commanders believe that Charles XII will do nothing. At 2pm a snowstorm quickly descends drastically reducing visibility. Under cover of this blizzard, the Swedish Army is given the order to advance towards the left wing of the Russian Army. The aim being to drive the Russians to the only crossing across the river. This scenario assumes the Swedes made the decision to concentrate their forces and attack the Russian left.
