Campaign -The Battle of Vyazma, Backs To The Wall - October 24,
1812 - Having decided to abandon Moscow before it was too late
Napoleon and his army have set off for Smolensk. They have stopped
at Vyazma along the way to rest their troops and restore organization.
Reports that the Russians are close behind have reached Napoleon
and he has decided to make a determined stand at Vyazma rather
than be harried during his whole retreat. If he can defeat the
Russians here he will gain the respite his army needs to establish
themselves at Smolensk and be able to survive the winter. If
he can maintain a sizable presence in Russia into 1813 he will
be able to secure a settlement with the Tsar.
