September 14, 1942. The United States Navy had the Hornet and Wasp south of Guadalcanal, covering the movement of a supply convoy. The IJN had three carriers north of the island. Historically, the two
sides never made solid enough contact to engage one another. However, the IJN Submarine I-19 would catch the Wasp during a course change. By the end of the day, the United States would be down to one active carrier in the South Pacific.
