0000 July 5, 1943. On July 4 the IJN sent 3 destroyers loaded with troops to Vila. At the same time USN forces were entering Kula Gulf with plans to bombard Japanese installations along the coast. The Japanese were lead by the newly comissioned Niizuki with its prototype radar. Detecting the Americans, R. Adm. Akiyama maneuvered, launched a spread of topredoes and then decided to abort his trasnport mission. The Americans were unaware of the IJN presence, conducted their bombardment mission, but were shocked when a torpedo punched into the USS Strong.
