0516 23 October 1944. As part of Sho-Go I, Admiral Kurita's Center Force was transiting the Palawan Passage en route to the San Bernandino Strait and the Battle off Samar. American submarines were spread throughout the Philippines as a screen. The Center Foce was picked up by Darter and Dace on radar shortly after midnight. Maneuvering over the next several hours on the suface, Darter and Dace found themselves in a position favorable for attack. They submerged with the intention of striking in the dawn's early light.
