0100 5 September, 1942. Rather than risk a return to Tulagi in the pitch black night, Cdr Hadley opted to patrol off Lunga Point. Gunflashes were reported at 0055. Thier radar screens picked up contacts at 0102. However, a US floatplane illuminated the APD's thinking they were responsible for the bombardment, giving the much stronger IJN force the opponunity to focus on them and put them down in short order.
