(Alternative 30 minute turns) On the rainy morning of March 27, 1865, thirty thousand men in blue rose from their soggy bivouac beds and fell into ranks for a final march. Their objectives were the fortified positions at Spanish Fort and Blakeley, Alabama, protectors of the eastern approaches to the City of Mobile, soon to be the last major city of the Confederacy to be holding out after four years of civil war. Standing ready to resist were about twelve thousand men in gray, a force consisting equally of green garrison troops and grizzled veterans of the storied Army of Tennessee. MajGen E R S Canby commanded the Union forces; MajGen Dabney H Maury commanded the defenders.
