Crusade: The Third Crusade
Scenario Briefing: Variant - In this variant, you will have the opportunity to play the siege of Jerusalem as it was intended to be played. That means a full force of Crusaders has arrived, and that includes Frederick Barbarossa, the Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire. Historically, Barbarossa drowned in southern Anatolia, just short of reaching the Levant. In this scenario, he did not make that fateful river crossing and waited for a better ford to be discovered. However, only about a third of his total Crusading force will participate as the remainder has been tasked in defending not only the hazardous road to Jerusalem to the coast, but also the cities and Crusading fortresses of the Levant. With his diminished force, he has allowed King Richard to take overall command of the army with the caveat that he has veto power over any command in which he disapproves.
To meet this force, Saladin, Ayyubid Sultan over all the Muslims of Egypt, Syria and the Levant, has also assembled and huge fighting force. Each army is determined to either reconquer the Holy City or maintain it as it starts the battle.
Background information as described in the previous scenario: During the actual events of the Third Crusade, King Richard, the Lion Heart of England, was unable to muster the resources needed to lay siege to Jerusalem. And it was his strategic thinking that reasoned that even if he was able to retake the Holy City, it would be unable to withstand a Muslim counterattack after his departure from the Levant. Which was inevitable given the developing situation at home in England. Remember, if a gate can be opened from the inside, then the Crusader cavalry will have a chance to pass through the gates and slaughter all the remaining defenders. You will even find civilians inside the city. How you treat them will be up to your own moral code.
Recommended Rules: [Default]
Intended to be played as the Crusader Alliance against the Anti Crusader Alliance AI and can be played Head-to-Head (PBEM).
Suggested Reading: Asbridge, Thomas, The Crusades: The Authoritative History of the War for the Holy Land.
