Crusade: The Third Crusade

Scenario Briefing: Variant - During the actual events of the Third Crusade, King Richard, the Lion Heart of England, was unable to muster the resources needed to lay siege to Jerusalem. And it was his strategic thinking that reasoned that even if he was able to retake the Holy City, it would be unable to withstand a Muslim counterattack after his departure from the Levant. Which was inevitable given the developing situation at home in England.

This scenario supposes that Richard was able to assemble a force capable of successfully besieging the city and holding it long enough for a new Crusading force to replace his original army with fresh Crusaders from Europe. Perhaps even a papal contingent that would add to its military defense.

This is a simple siege scenario. Saladin was forced to hurry to Jerusalem and assemble what forces he could. Saladin's army is insufficient to launch a sortie from the city but should be able to put up a strong internal defense. Though equipped with stronger siege engines than has been seen in earlier scenarios, the Crusader's main piece of equipment will still be the 4 ladders that are assigned to the infantry units. However, there is also a siege tower, some sappers, a ram, and several catapults. Use them wisely to get over and into the city. If a gate can be opened from the inside, then the Crusader cavalry will have a chance to pass through the gates and slaughter all the remaining defenders. You will even find civilians inside the city. How you treat them will be up to your own moral code.

Note that only the English contingent have arrived in time to initiate the siege.
