Crusade: The Third Crusade

Scenario Briefing: Variant - In this variant of the previous scenario, Saladin has assembled a small cavalry force to assist the garrison attempts to defeat King Richard. Also, this scenario has been lengthened to accommodate the fact that with these additional forces, it will take the besieging Crusaders a longer period of time to take Damietta.

Previous scenario notes: Not long after the Crusader's successful conclusion to the siege of Acre, King Richard I determined that the best way to ensure the security of the Holy Land from future Muslim attempts to retake the Levant, would be to first conquer Egypt. Egypt has long been the target of both the Kings of Jerusalem, as we saw in earlier scenarios during the period between the Second and Third Crusades, and rival Muslim potentates like Sultan Nur al-Din Zengi and the Ayyubids under Saladin. In this "What If" scenario, Richard's first target will be the Nile city of Damietta, near the Mediterranean seacoast. In this scenario, we are picking up after the battle for Jaffa and just as at the battle, the Crusader army was primarily be comprised of troops brought from England.

At Damietta, the Crusaders under the command of King Richard will only be facing the city garrison and will have ladders to assault the city walls. Although the Crusaders also have brought a couple of catapults, if the ladders are lost, there will be no way to take the city in the time provided. As the Crusader, you must approach with caution.
