Crusade: Period between 1st and 2nd Crusade

Scenario Briefing: Following the capture of Jerusalem in 1099, there were many skirmishes and some small-scale battles, but on this day, the Empire of the Seljuks would seek a large-scale battle to avenge their earlier defeats. The Crusaders were looking to expand their territory and set out to besiege and capture the Seljuq city of Harran. First on the scene was Baldwin II of Edessa and Joscelin of Courtenay. Needing assistance, Baldwin called upon both Bohemond I of Antioch and Tancred. They soon marched to Harran to join with Baldwin.

To counter this new threat, Jikirmish of Mosul and Sokman of Mardin, assembled an army to besiege Edessa. Given this threat to Edessa, Baldwin and his allies marched to relieve the siege on Edessa and were soon to encounter the Seljuks near the crossroads south of Harran.

The armies were nearly equal in size, but as usual, there was a Seljuk numerical superiority. The combined Crusader army exceeded 11,000. This number included over 3,000 mounted heavy cavalry. The Seljuks numbered approximately 15,000 in total. With more than half of this total comprised of the usual fast moving mounted archers. The use of these archers was both feared and respected by the Crusaders. However, at close range, they were no match for the more heavily armored Crusader mounts.
