(Historical) Having decided to take up a more defensive position at Strasburg, Confederate Lt. Gen. Early ordered the evacuation of Winchester. To cover this move, he ordered Ramseur's Division to cover the retreat. At 11am on the 20th of July, Ramseur's men and a Union cavalry force, under the command of William Averell, clashed near Rutherford's farm. A small battle, engaging fewer than 6,000 total troops.
