Lee and his Army of Northern Virginia suffered a major defeat at Cold Harbor. To save the remnants of his army, Lee ordered all Confederate forces to fall back behind the Chickohominy River. After a short rest, the Rebels continued their retreat to the Richmond defenses where they were determined to make one last stand against the Union juggernaut. As long as the Confederates could keep the Union Army out of the Capital, there was still hope. But from which direction would Grant attack? The Chickohominy River was an imposing natural defense. Grant was unlikely to assault across that wet and swampy terrain. An attack from the east seemed more likely but the northern approach via the Brook Turnpike was also a possibility. But from which direction would Grant attack? The Chickohominy River was an imposing natural defense. Lee reasoned that Grant was unlikely to assault across that wet and swampy terrain. An attack from the east seemed more likely but the northern approach via the Brook Turnpike was also a possibility. Lee calculated that an attack from the north posed the greater danger and so he positioned his army against an attack from that direction. The situation at dawn reveals Grant's strategy. A large part of the Union army has crossed the upper Chickohominy River and is poised to attack the Confederate capital from the north -- just as Lee had anticipated. A second force is ready to cross the river at New Bridge to support the northern attack. Grant expects this to be the climatic battle of the war. The day promises to exact a human toll not yet seen in this long and already bloody campaign.
