May 10, 1864. After the Union foothold south of the Po River was crushed early in the morning, Meade spent most of the day, triying (unsuccessfully) to launch a major attack on Laurel HIll. Finally, late in the afternoon, Grant approved a massed infantry attack against the west face of the Mule Shoe salient. Lt. Col Upton was to lead the attack and was promised a brigadier's star if he could successfully break the Confederate line. Upton's strategy was to mass twelve regiments in column and to charge the Rebel works without stopping to return fire. His attack was to be supported by at least another division. Upton's daring attack was indeed successful but his support never materialized. The Union breakthrough was contained and Yankee troops were forced out of the salient. But what if Upton's attack had been properly supported? Could improved coordination break the Confederate line in the Mule Shoe on May 10th? Or was the attack too little too late in the day to achieve success?
