Probably the best option for the French player is to retreat his Left Wing to the walls of Novi, while marching his Right Wing to the rescue, keeping it east of the river without attempting to cross it in front of the Allied covering force. If the Allies concentrate and are able to isolate the French Left Wing, they can beat it in detail before the other half of the enemy army could even intervene.
