3 August 1796 - Historical - Intended to be played Head to Head - Würmser was moving north from Mantua to link up with Quosdonavich's column. Unaware that an engagement was taking place at Lonato, Würmser ordered the advance guard under the command of Lipthay to take Castiglione during the morning. This they did with no resistance and posted themselves on the western edges. Soon after this Augereau brought up his forces and his attack forced Lipthay to retreat on the main army which came up round 3pm. Although he probably had plenty of time to defeat the lesser forces of the French Würmser decided to halt operations for the day. Rightfully so as Bonaparte was just to the north with Massena and probably would have marched to the sound of the guns and fallen on the Austrian right flank!

The first 10 turns are crucial: if the Austrians manage to reach Solferino before the French, they will almost surely win the battle. Moreover, one of the two objective hexes in Castiglione is a chateau, so it will probably remain in Austrian hands through the entire scenario. In the end, if the French player is not enough aggressive (and lucky), the Austrian one will easily achieve a major victory.

The situation was interesting, but there was a lull in the game when neither side was able to do much, that made it dull for many turns. It became better when the Allied reinforcements started to arrive.
