14 October 1813 - Historical - Intended to be played Head to Head - Murat had been entrusted with covering the southern approaches to Leipzig and on the 13th the Allies began arriving to his front. Initially his reaction was to begin pulling back from the fine position near Liebertwolkwitz and Wachau but when Napoleon heard of this he sent a courier off to Murat to regain his positions. On the 14th the Allies began moving in on his positions and by 9am were starting to make their assault. Poniatowski held the right with Victor in the center and Lauriston on the left. With them were three cavalry reserves, Augereau's IX Corps and a division of Young Guard. Barclay's Russians, Kleist's Prussians and the Austrian 4th Corps under Klenau comprised the Allied forces. While the infantry factored greatly in the outcome this battle will be remembered its great cavalry attacks. Murat formed up his cavalry in a huge block which while it was intimidating proved to be less than effective. He would lose precious cavalry that could have been used in the coming days. The Allies, for their part, committed their cavalry in small groups which accomplished little. In the end neither side could claim victory: Murat had squandered his cavalry and had not used his superior infantry numbers correctly while the Allies had made an attack against the French position without proper reconnaissance.
