The Federal army has been defeated at Little Yellow Creek, but Price's plan for a quick strike to take Corinth has been foiled by the recent battle. Price decides that continuing on to Corinth alone is too risky and retreats during the night. The cavalry is ordered to drive the retreating Federals back to Corinth.
