1 September 1808 - Historical - Intended to be played Head to Head or Solo as the Allied player vs. the AI (see RSW-Solo.pdf for Solo play victory levels) - The Russians, under Kamensky and Raevsky, had taken Alavo and by late August had concentrated their forces together to attack Adlercreutz' division. Gripenberg's 3rd Brigade at Ruona fortified its position. Along with the other forces with his command he had 5,000 men. The Russians advanced to the north to attack the Swedes. Kamensky sent two small detachments around the Swedish right flank while he attacked the main Swedish position at Ruona. Raevsky's wing took some time to develop their part of the plan but were in place on September 1st to help carry the Swedish postion. The Swedes were deployed along the heights to the east and north of Ruona. Two batteries had been built to help defend the crucial bridge. Much further to the north was deployed Cedergren's 4th Brigade which would protect the division's left flank. Raevsky attacked the Swedish 3rd Brigade which was positioned north of the main Ruona position but was stopped by concentrated artillery and musket fire. Likewise a flanking march by Erickson against the 4th Brigade met the same fate. Swedish counterattacks also proved futile. The battle gradually died out with nightfall. Adlercreutz' division had held off superior numbers but at a high cost. The flanking Russian columns were held in check (by a solid defense by the Karelian Jager on one hand and terrain difficulties on the other) but the threat to his flank caused Adlercreutz to call for a retreat. The battle was a victory for the Swedes but the Russians retained the initiative.
