17 August 1808 - Historical - Intended to be played Head to Head or Solo as the French player vs. the AI (see RSW-Solo.pdf for Solo play victory levels) - General Klingspor ordered General Adlercreutz to capture Alavo in order to better align his front. Pressing south on August 16th his forces reached Alavo on the 17th at around 1330 hours. The Russians were composed of two forces: Erikson's column (near Alavo) and a detachment to the rear near Härkönen under Sabaneyev. Apparently the two were not in communication and the command was split. The Swedish-Finnish forces were divided up into two columns. The main column headed south to Alavo while a separate column under Gripenberg made a flank march to try and cut off the supposed retreat path of Erikson's forces. The Russians were facing north, informed of the advance of Adlercreutz' forces. More Russians arrived from the east as the action started. Cronstedt's vanguard advanced on the Russians in a spirited assault and when he went down Palmfelt took his place. Soon more of Adlercreutz' force was arriving to press the attack. Gripenberg's flanking force arrived about an hour after the engagement started but took up a defensive position expecting that the Russians would be coming his way as they marched to the southeast. Seeing that the the Russians to his front were in retreat he had his men continue the attack. Erikson saw his force and feared enveleopment so he pulled back to the south to link up with Sabaneyev's force. Adlercreutz force moved south with Gripenberg's forces following up and were able to break through the Russians defenses and force them south. Adlercreutz had accomplished his objective but the battle had been one of the more costly ventures to this point in the war.

Tricky for the Russians as the Swedes end up with a numerical advantage by turn 17 or so, so a plan has to be devised to deal with that.
