Situation: Alternate - The Battle of Caldiero was a see-saw affair that saw both sides take and retake the village and the heights.
The first day's action started with Verdier putting the 62nd Ligne across the Adige by boat and then drive on the Austrian left only to be repulsed by Grenzers and Grenadiers of Nordmann's division. Falling back on Duhesme's division they remained apart from their parent division for the rest of the day while Verdier countered a supposed threat to Verona.
The Austrians under a cautious Charles waited for the fog to clear thereby allowing Duhesme's division to gain the village. Initial counterattacks by the Austrians drove the French back only to be repulsed by advancing French formations. By the end of the day neither side had gained their objectives and the battle was still hanging in the balance.
