27 February 1814 - Historical - Intended for Head to Head play - Napoleon had marched to the north to shadow the Army of Silesia as it tried (in vain) to march on Paris. Meanwhile, MacDonald was left in command of the southern forces which comprised his corps (XII), II & VII Corps as well as the VI Cavalry Corps. Altogether he had about 30,000 men to deter the Allies under Schwarzenberg. Oudinot was near Bar-sur-Aube with his VII corps and Gerard's II Corps and had not deployed his troops correctly. Kellerman's cavalry was to the rear as was the heavy cavalry of St. Germaine. To compound problems he only had eight guns. When the Allies attacked him frontally to the north of the town initially they held but pressure put on Leval by Wittgenstein caused them to fall back. Kellerman arrived in time to make a timely attack but the French eventually lost the right bank of the Aube river and had to retire. The retreat would continue all the way back to Troyes. Another battle had been lost due to ineptness of the French generals. NOTES: a. The Russian column of Eugene and Pahlen was ordered to make an outflanking move on the French and march to Dolancourt. They are fixed to reflect the fact that Wittgenstein did not have control over them. They will eventually release (variable percentage). b. The 5th Armeekorps was waiting for the Russians to make their main assault and thus held off until they felt that the time was right to drive in the French right flank and take the city. As usual, the Austrians would ask the Bavarians to lead the assault. The Bavarian forces will relese (variable percentage rising as the afternoon progresses) eventually and join the attack. The Austrians have a lower chance (5 percent) of getting into the action. c. The French in Bar-sur-Aube were guarding the city. They eventually release. The French player is asked to not make attacks on the fixed Allied units that are east of Bar-sur-Aube before they release.
