Braga 20 March 1809 - Crossing the Portuguese border near Chaves on 9 March, the French invasion force under Soult quickly brushed aside Silveira's levies and marched towards Oporto via Braga rather than via Amarante and Penafiel. Meanwhile, a large, badly-led and ill-equipped Portuguese force was waiting for him at Braga, having made no attempt to defend the Serra da Cabreira passes.
