Allied forces in Italy have been stopped cold both at Monte Cassino and its ambitious amphibious landing at Anzio since January. Now a month before the Allied invasion of France, the Allied forces in Italy will execute its largest offensive in order to break the Gustav Line, link up with the attacking forces out of Anzio and draw German strategic reserves away from France. The Allies would crack the Gustav Line and liberate Rome but would again find itself unable to quickly break the newly constructed Gothic Line defenses.
