Hell in the Parroy - The Matrix Games version of West Front

Parroy Forest, 30km ESE of Nancy, France: [Best played as Allied] Long before the first units of Patton's Third Army battered their way into the rail and highway hub of Luneville, southeast of Nancy, the German Fifth Panzer Army had established bases and supply depots deep in the Parroy Forest. The dark interior provided good protection from airstrikes and was perfect as an assembly area for troops and armor to launch counterattacks against Third Army's right flank. Garrisoned by elements of the 15th Panzer Grenadier Division, the deteriorated trenches from World War I had been strengthened with mines, roadblocks and timber bunkers, which combined with the poor September weather to make the Foret de Parroy a hell in which to fight a pitched battle. If left undisturbed German units would continue to hamper the American advance east to Sarrebourg and the encirclement of Nancy. The task of clearing the German strongpoints from the thickly wooded Parroy was handed to the 79th Infantry Division. On September 30th, another day of heavy rain, the GIs of the 313th and 315th Infantry Regiments continued their drive through the dark forest where they were locked in a bitter struggle with the German 115th PzG Regiment.
