Clervaux, 16km NE of Bastogne, Belgium: [Best Played as Axis] It was the second day of the offensive, and already 2nd Panzer was behind schedule. The American resistance at Marnach had been much tougher than expected, and the town which should have been passed through in the early hours of the 16th, held out till late in the evening. Now, on the 17th, with the fog thinning a bit, 2nd Panzer, led by KG Holtmeyer, renewed its push west, toward Bastogne. First however, the Clerf River had to be crossed at Clervaux. As KG Holtmeyer moved forward, it was met by a hodgepodge of American defenders from the 28th Infantry Division who also understood the strategic importance of this otherwise picturesque village.
