One of the most vicious episodes of the Kohima campaign was the battle that took place around the Deputy Commissioner's Bungalow and it's tennis courts in the middle of May 1944. The bungalow and other hilltop strongpoints on the central Kohima Ridge had been overrun by the Japanese on the night of April 9th and promptly fortified them, the terraced hillsides were particularly well suited to the construction of bunkers and weapon pits. By May 12th the British had retaken all the surrounding strongpoints but the Japanese were still holding grimly to the bungalow and tennis court.
