Orsha, Russia: [Best Played vs. Human Opponent]: The assault units of the 63. Motorized Rifle Regiment had succeeded in crossing the Dnepr on the 10th of July in the opening stages for the battle of Smolensk. On the east side however, the infantry ran into fierce resistance from the Russian 152nd Rifle Division. Engaged in hand to hand fighting and with casualties mounting in the woods on the east side of the river, the regimental commander was left with a decision. to hold, or not to hold. [2.04 UPDATE]

The Germans have the firepower, the Soviets have the numbers. The heavily forested terrain favors the Soviets, because it enables the Allied player to get in close and to bring sufficient mass to bear to force retreats and enable assaults of disrupted German units. Russians must be prepared to accept heavy casualties to have a chance at achieving a minor victory. Probably impossible for the Allied player to achieve a major victory, though.

After two plays, once as each side, my point of view on the balance of this one has totally changed. Definitely easier for the Axis player.
