Otto Skorzeny, chief of Germany's 'special' troops was rebuilding his command after it's near destruction in the Battle of the Bulge when he received a phone call from Reichsfuhrer SS Heinrich Himmler, commander of Army Group 'Vistula'. Skorzeny was to mobilize his troops and march to the Oder River and hold a bridge-head at Schwedt. Skorzeny argued that this was no job for his type of troops but was overruled and so gathered up the sonder - kommando and parachute battalion at his disposal and made for Schwedt. Skorzeny found some units at his destination and used all his considerable reputation and cunning to transform the remnants of retreating divisions into willing defenders. Skorzeny's men scrounged a large number of 75mm anti tank guns from an abandoned factory and supervised the building of strong points, trenches and minefields.
