On 13 May 1944 a large-scale Soviet attack of some 50 tanks from the 56th Guards Tank Brigade and attached units, moved against IIIrd Battalion, Grenadier Regiment 325, holding the line at Ostrow Radstavia, a small village inside the Polish boarder. Early that morning, the enemy advanced with Engineer and Infantry units out in front probing for mines. The 325 made contact with the enemy force when Soviet Engineers breached the mine field under intense fire. The German Grenadiers could hear the roar and rumble of enemy tanks moving closer. Massed in a tight formation, the Soviet armor, along with their tank riding Infantry poured through the mine field breach heading for the Grenadiers at full steam. The call went out for help.
