Basino, 5km SE of Belyi, Russia. [Best Played against Human Opponent] It is the second day of Operation Mars, the Soviet offensive to reduce the Rzhev salient. Frustrated by their inability to capture Belyi on the northern flank of the thrust, the Russian 1st Mechanized Corps turns east in an attempt to cut communications to the key town. Meanwhile, a kampfgruppe from the 1st Pz is moving to reinforce Belyi but must quickly redeploy to defend the vital road amidst heavy snow squalls. This is the first of two scenarios concerning the failed Russian offensive "Operation Mars" specifically the fighting east of the key German held town of Belyi. Like the other battle 'Crisis Along the Obsha', this scenario is based on the description of the fighting in David Glantz's brilliant book "Zhukov's Greatest Defeat".

Excellent map and counter mix. Scenario slightly favors the Axis only due to being on the defense.
As it is winter, the Russians once committed cannot dramatically change their avenue of attack. The Germans are powerful enough to daunt any Russian player and have the flexibility of having the only paved road on the map. However, the Russians need only one to two objectives.
