On July 20th, the VII Army Corps surrounded the city on the west bank of the Dnepr River with its four divisions. The Russians resisted tenaciously. The 23. Infantry Division succeeded in establishing a bridgehead to the south part of the city, capturing it by the following day. A costly attempt to seize the road bridge heading into the northern section of the city was successful, by elements of the 67 Infantry Regiment. Under the cover of a low level mist, the Russians managed to blow up and destroy a large section of the rail bridge to the southeast of the city, thereby cutting off their only escape route. With that, the Russians were holding lost positions and would fight bitterly to the end. Heavy losses would succumb to the four Infantry Divisions.
