Although the summer fighting was heavy and the other sectors received the bulk of the refits and reinforcements.In this sector the Germans mustered what they could to effect a bridgehead that would allow for one more thrust that would carry them into the fall. Once consolidated across the river they could concentrate on the preperation for winter. This would block Russian winter movement and help to upset their plans for a winter offensive.
