Suomussalmi Finland, 170km E of Oulu; 570 Km N of Leningrad: [Best played against Human opponent] Despite Soviet successes in the first few weeks following the beginning of the "Winter War" with Finland, the fighting assumed a deadly attritional nature as Finnish ski troops, familiar with the terrain and climate, consolidated their positions and began fighting back in earnest. By late December the Russian pre invasion plan had collapsed in the face of determined resistance. At Suomussalmi, having cut off and encircled most of the Russian 163rd Rifle Division, the recently organized Finnish 9th Infantry Division launched a series of attacks in late December. The fighting was vicious and hand to hand in the near dark and frozen hell of winter. The Finnish infantry charged across the deep snow against the Russians huddled in their positions. As the sun began to set on the 28th, Soviet resistance collapsed in the face of the Finnish assaults and the 163rd was overrun, giving Finland one of its few major victories in the short war in the snow.

The Finnish ski troops give this one a unique feel. Patience and willingness to recon properly are virtues for the Finnish player. Russians are not without their advantages, however.

We Russians had all the advantages. We're fighting the Finns, who have a much smaller army and should give up easily. We're well dug in for the battle with a superior force. Granted our soldiers don't know why they're there, we purged our best generals and our equipment sucks. -they should just run away. Sound familiar?

Finns are more mobile on skis and have better troop morale. Russians have good fortifications (lots of bunkers) and better artillery. Only way for the Finns to win is to be ready to assault the bunkers.
