However, having crossed the Oder River the weary panzertruppen would be given little chance to rest and refit before being thrown against the advancing Soviet 4th Tank Army once again. Even though they realized the hopelessness and impending defeat of the German cause, the men of the 16th Panzer choose to continue the desperate struggle for the same reasons most soldiers of any nationality will fight to the end, their friends and honor! By the end of January the Red Army had forced a number of crossings north and south of Breslau on the Oder in preparation for a concerted drive into Germany. Most serious of these bridgeheads was located downstream at Steinau. Advancing from Glogau and reinforced by the 424th Tiger Battalion under Major von Legat, panzers from the 2nd Panzer Regiment were once more thrown into the breach against the 56th and 28th Gds Heavy Tank Regiments spearheading the 6th Gds Mechanized Corps near Gaffron.
