Clash at Daken - The Matrix Games version of East Front II

16-10-44 the Soviet 3rd Belorussian Front broke through weak German units defending the East Prussian border. By the 21st Soviet tank units from the 11th Gds Army were deep inside Prussia. OKH quickly committed the Hermann Goering & 5th Pz. Divisions from the north and the recently formed Fuhrer Grenadier Brigade from the south. On the 21st at a factory north of Daken I.Btl Pzgrdr,FGB moving north from Goldap skirmished with Russian forces (elements of the 12th Gds Rifle Corps) which had crossed the Rominte River at Matzhausen. The Pzgdrs pushed the Soviet units back and took up defensive postions. Later in the day, II.Btl Pzgrdr,FGB moving NE from Herzogsrode made contact with Russian forces north of Preussich-nassen. The Pzgrdrs assumed all-around defense for the night waiting for the arrival of the FGB Pz.Btl. Meanwhile, the Soviet Command, aware of the situation, ordered 2nd Gds Tk Corps back east towards Matzhausen to join the 12th and secure the Grosswaltersdorf bridge.
