Lopyashna, 53km WSW of Kishinev: [Best played as Allied] After resting and absorbing reinforcements in Kishinev, the 3rd SS "Totenkopf" Panzer Division was attached to the battered German 8th Army. The 8th Army was retreating before the tired and slowing Russian 3rd Ukrainian Front nearing the end of the 1944 Russian Winter Offensive. With the 8th Army retiring behind the Siret River, the Totenkopf Division met and turned back three probes launched across the Dniester River by the 3rd Ukrainian Front. By using the rolling hillsides and valleys of Moldova, the Totenkopf Division set up a series of delaying actions reinforced with panzers to punish the Russian mobile spearheads before their supporting armor could attack their delaying force. The Russians responded by supporting their spearheads with strong armored forces following their leading mobile infantry.
