Fit, eager and ready to prove the maxim that offense is the best form of defense, the first company of the mechanized infantry regiment was ordered to hold the north-south highway 18 kilometers to the east of Friedberg. As the company approached the village of Echzel, the lead elements spotted enemy armor moving amongst the woods and houses. Suddenly all hell broke loose. The accompanying AMX-30s lurched into action and began firing their 105s before popping smoke, while the remainder of the company spread out and began to attack the village...
