Scenario Briefing: Beaten back by Polish reservists, 4th Panzer Division's effort to capture Warsaw in a swift coup de main failed on September 9th. That same day, Army Poznan launched its counteroffensive on the Bzura River, forcing the German command to divert several of 10th Army's divisions to shore up Army Group South's buckling left flank. Continued ground operations against Warsaw from the south and west were put on hold.

The pause in operations bought time for Julius Rommel, commander of Army Warsaw, to strength the city garrison. Reinforcements arrived from the north and east while surplus reservists and volunteers from the city's populace formed new regiments and battalions. As the garrison grew, the Poles pushed their defensive perimeter outward from the city center, occupying a network of old Russian forts on the western outskirts.

Meanwhile, elements of the 3rd Army crossed the Bug on September 9th and advanced to the south against spirited but disjointed resistance from the remnants of Operational Group Wyszkow. On September 15th, I Army Corps reached the eastern edge of Warsaw. Aside from the road to Fortress Modlin, the Polish capital's lines of supply and communication were cut. Though the Germans declined to assault Warsaw, air operations only intensified. Daily bombing raids against rail infrastructure and civilian targets reduced much of the city to rubble.

While Warsaw lay under siege, the Battle of the Bzura concluded on September 19th. Around 50,000 survivors from armies Poznan and Pomorze escaped into the Kampinos Forest and made for Modlin and Warsaw. Most were rounded up and captured, but a few thousand, including remnants of the 15th and 25th infantry divisions, managed to reinforce the Warsaw garrison. Meanwhile, the Germans tightened their grip around the city. 18th Infantry Division interposed itself between Warsaw and Modlin on September 21st, completing the Warsaw's encirclement. By September 24th, five infantry divisions had been deployed along the western perimeter of the city, plus one infantry and one light division in reserve. General Blaskowitz of the 8th Army took command of all the German forces operating against Warsaw.

Blaskowitz ordered his forces to prepare for a general assault on September 26th. 10th and 31st Infantry divisions, assigned to Maximilian von Weichs' XIII Army Corps and supported by an impressive array of artillery (including a battery of 31cm howitzers), would make the main effort in the vicinity of Ochota and Mokatow. Though the general assault was scheduled for the 26th, the Germans would first need to push past the old Russian fortresses in order to gain access to the city. Elements of the 18th, 19th, 31st, 10th, and 46th divisions went into action against the forts at dawn on September 25th, encountering stiff resistance in a battle that would be characterized by desperate Polish resistance and staggering casualties.

Recommended Rules: (Default)
Alternative Assault Resolution, Artillery Set Up, Recon Spotting, Virtual Supply Trucks, Optional Surrender, Low Visibility Air Effects, Quality Fatigue Modifier, Counter Battery Fire, Night Fatigue, Programmed Weather.

Additionally, Delayed Disruption Reporting will provide a more challenging experience for the attacking player.

Design Notes:

1. The German forces on the eastern perimeter of Warsaw played a mostly passive role in the battle. Objective hexes on the east side of the Vistula have little value. The German player does not need them to win and any points gained from their capture would likely be offset by points lost due to German casualties.
